Abundance and diversity of Planctomycetes in a Tyrrhenian coastal system of central Italy ArchiMer

The phylum Planctomycetes is involved in important processes, such as the mineralization of algal biomass and the removal of nitrogen. Using a combination of 16S rRNA sequence analysis and in situ hybridization, we analyzed the diversity and dynamics of Planctomycetes in a shallow meso-eutrophic lake, Lago di Paola, Italy. Planctomycetes detected by the probe PLA46 accounted for 1 to 5% of prokaryotic picoplankton. Abundances were higher in the coastal lake than in the adjacent marine waters. In the surface waters of the lake, the numbers of Planctomycetes fluctuated greatly, reaching a maximum of 1.5 x 10(6) cells ml(-1) in July. Bacteremia due to Moraxella osloensis: a case report and literature review BJID

ABSTRACT Herein we report the case of a 10-year-old boy with an autosomal mosaic mutation who developed bacteremia. The causative agent was identified as Moraxella osloensis by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In the pediatric population, there have been 13 case reports of infection attributed to M. osloensis and this is the fifth reported case of pediatric bacteremia due to M. osloensis. After Moraxella species infection was confirmed, the patient recovered with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. It is important to consider that M. osloensis can cause serious infections, such as bacteremia, in otherwise healthy children.

Exploring the Impact of the Biofloc Rearing System and an Oral WSSV Challenge on the Intestinal Bacteriome of Litopenaeus vannamei ArchiMer

We provide a global overview of the intestinal bacteriome of Litopenaeus vannamei in two rearing systems and after an oral challenge by the White spot syndrome virus (WSSV). By using a high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology, we identified and compared the composition and abundance of bacterial communities from the midgut of shrimp reared in the super-intensive biofloc technology (BFT) and clear seawater system (CWS). The predominant bacterial group belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria, followed by the phyla Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. Elucidating the role of prokaryotic symbionts in mediating host physiology has emerged as an important area of research. Since oysters are the world’s most heavily cultivated bivalve molluscs, numerous studies have applied molecular techniques to understand the taxonomic and functional diversity of their associated bacteria. Here, we expand on this research by assessing the composition and putative functional profiles of prokaryotic communities from different organs/compartments of the black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, a commercially important shellfish valued for cultured pearl production in the Pacific region. Thermophilic bacteria in Moroccan hot springs, salt marshes and desert soils BJM

The diversity of thermophilic bacteria was investigated in four hot springs, three salt marshes and 12 desert sites in Morocco. Two hundred and forty (240) thermophilic bacteria were recovered, identified and characterized. All isolates were Gram positive, rod-shaped, spore forming and halotolerant. Based on BOXA1R-PCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the recovered isolates were dominated by the genus Bacillus (97.5%) represented by B. licheniformis (119), B. aerius (44), B. sonorensis (33), B. subtilis (subsp. spizizenii (2) and subsp. inaquosurum (6)), B. amyloliquefaciens (subsp. amyloliquefaciens (4) and subsp. plantarum (4)), B. tequilensis (3), B. pumilus (3) and Bacillus sp.
